Charles Russell Cox

Campbellsville

Charles Russell Cox of Elk Horn, son of the late Edgar Cox and Nellie Mae Watson Cox, was born October 25, 1932 in Taylor County, Kentucky. He died at 5:50 P.M., Wednesday, April 1, 2026 at his home in Elk Horn at the age of 93.

He professed faith in Christ and was the pastor of ElkHorn Tabernacle as well as an online community of believers. He worked at Union Underwear for 17 years and then opened Cox’s Body Shop where he fixed and rebuilt vehicles until he began preaching full time.

Charles united in marriage to Nellie Mae Wagoner February 19, 1952 and they shared 75 wonderful years together. They loved to garden and go “antiquing” in their younger years.

He was strong, hardworking and filled with faith. He loved his church and the people he met during the time they traveled to other churches to preach the gospel. His life spoke loudly. He lived exactly what he preached. He was admired and an advisor to many.

He enjoyed hunting squirrels and fishing with his sons and friends. He was the kind of man who knew how to fix just about anything. If something was broken, he’d find a way. If someone needed help, he’d show up. He had a steady strength about him that was rooted and grounded like a tree that could not be moved. He truly was one of a kind, and the footprint he left behind will not be forgotten. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the message he stood for.

Besides his wife, Nellie Mae Wagoner Cox of Elk Horn, Charles is survived by two sons and one daughter: Gary Cox and wife, Linette and Larry Cox and wife, Debbie of Campbellsville and Melinda Neal and husband, Kenneth of Elk Horn; eight grandchildren: Shane Cox and wife, Ronna, Bethany Cox, Hannah Borlovan and husband, Josh, Ivy Neal and Lily Neal of Campbellsville, Ryan Cox and wife, Wendy of Indiana, Moriah Johnson and husband, Andrew and Chloe Johnson and husband, Levi of Ohio; twelve great-grandchildren: Peyton Cox and wife, Jordann, Karlie Cox, Kendall Cox, Malachi Cox, Savvy Cox, Callie Cox, Josiah Borlovan, Banks Borlovan, Bowen Borlovan, Sunny Borlovan, Thea Johnson and Finn Johnson; one great-great-grandchild, Boone Cox; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends. Charles was also preceded in death by one brother and four sisters: Rodney Cox, Opal Wood, Ruby Wood, Virginia Gabehart and Ina Spalding.
